How to Renew or Replace a Lost Malawian Passport

You can renew an expired Malawian passport or replace a lost one through the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services. Both processes require you to collect an application form and submit documents at an immigration office. The Department advises applicants to allow at least 20 days for processing before any planned travel.¹²

Getting your application form

Passport application forms are available free of charge from any Immigration office in Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu and all other regional Immigration offices.²¹² You can also download the form from the immigration website. Do not photocopy the form as it has a unique computer-generated barcode number.² If you live outside Malawi, you can obtain the form from the nearest Malawi foreign mission.¹²

Documents you need

For a renewal, bring one completed passport application form, two passport-size photographs and your previous passport.¹ For a replacement due to loss, bring one completed form, one passport-size photograph, a police report and a Report of Lost form.¹

When submitting your application, show all original documents in person.¹³ Self-attested copies of all required documents must be attached with the original application form.¹³ If you have lived at more than one address in the last year, provide two additional photocopies of the application form for each additional place of stay.¹³

Where to apply

You can submit your application at Immigration offices in Blantyre, Lilongwe or Mzuzu for processing.² All regional Immigration offices also accept applications.²

How long it takes

Allow at least 20 days for your passport to be processed and ready.¹² The Immigration Department strongly advises you not to make travel plans before your passport is ready.¹²
